Before I started to turn it, this was a gnarled growth sawn from the side of a huge Ash tree trunk, and weighed about 20kgs, even though it had been drying for several years . It was the most fearsome bit of turning I have done so far, because of the inbalance - which caused very considerable vibration in my lathe (which weighs several hundred kilograms!) when i was turning it, even at a very low speed. However, it was well worth the effort, and the piece looked very dramatic when finished - particularly with a stubby candle burning in it, and the candlelight emphasising some of the natural voids in the walls, and casting flickering shadows.
