Platter with Carved and Scorched Bowl Rim, in Figured Sycamore

Diameter - 32 cms

This piece of wood was a thin slice off the outside of the trunk of a storm-damaged tree, and was cut in order to provide a flat surface on the trunk so that the milling machine could slice off planks. When I saw the figuring on the inside edge, I was tempted by its beauty, but realised that it would be quite a challenge to turn such a flimsy piece of wood without it falling apart on the lathe! In the end, valour (or foolhardiness!) got the better part of discretion.....and this platter was created.
